The recent news of a beloved figure in animation has left many fans heartbroken. A significant part of cinematic history has come to an end, marking a sad beginning to the year 2025.

A miniature donkey known as Perry, who served as the live model for the character Donkey in the Shrek movies, has unfortunately left us. Over the weekend, it was disclosed that Perry was euthanised after a prolonged struggle with laminitis, a distressing hoof ailment.

Perry resided at Bol Park for nearly thirty years, with his journey beginning there in 1997. He captured the hearts of viewers by bringing the animated Donkey to life, contributing to the film’s iconic status.

Despite the dedicated efforts of his caretakers to alleviate his suffering, Perry's condition remained severe for an extended period. There were times when he could only lift one leg to escape pain, remaining still as he battled the illness. As the circumstances failed to get better, it became واضحاً that it was decided that euthanising him was the most compassionate choice.

During his final moments, over a dozen caretakers were by his side, and his companion donkeys in the pasture were thoughtfully allowed to express their grief. Rest in peace, Perry. Your legacy may not carry the voice of Eddie Murphy, but you were an irreplaceable part of what made Donkey truly special.
