Paradox Interactive has discontinued its life simulation game, Life by You, resembling The Sims. The news was shared by Paradox’s deputy CEO, Mattias Lilja. He acknowledged that the termination of the highly-anticipated game was a very difficult decision and a clear shortfall on Paradox’s part in meeting both their own and the community’s expectations.
Initially announced in May 2023, Life by You was slated for an early access release in September of the same year. However, this launch was postponed to May 2024, and Paradox later announced a subsequent delay to June 4.
As the new release date approached, the developer postponed the launch once more but did not specify a new release date.
Lilja elaborated in the announcement that each postponement facilitated "incremental improvements" but possibly shifted the focus from the overall vision to minute details. A few weeks prior, the team decided to pause the Early Access release to reassess Life by You, feeling the game was still lacking in critical areas. Although extending the timeline was considered, it became apparent that achieving a satisfactory release was a daunting and uncertain path.
Despite some promising qualities in Life by You and the dedication of the team, Lilja stated that when it became clear additional time wouldn’t bring them close to a satisfactory version, it was better to halt the project. This decision was particularly tough and disappointing for everyone invested in the project, especially given how late it came in the development process.
While specifics on the challenges faced by the team were not disclosed, Lilja admitted that game development is complex and that the team might find themselves in a similar situation in the future. He emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the factors leading to this point and the necessary changes to improve. Ultimately, the mission remains unchanged, and they will continue to take necessary steps to achieve it.
