Forging Bonds and Battling Brothers: Chris Hemsworth Explores Deep Connections in Transformers One
Chris Hemsworth draws a compelling comparison between the relationships of Optimus Prime and Megatron in Transformers One and Thor and Loki in the Marvel universe. Despite the stark differences in their origins—one being a god and the other a robot—Hemsworth identifies striking similarities between the characters.
The actor notes the arrogance exhibited by Thor, especially in his early days before he learns humility, whereas Orion Pax (later known as Optimus Prime) doesn't display as much of that trait. Hemsworth shared these insights at San Diego Comic Con 2024 in an interview with Gamesradar+.
In the forthcoming Transformers movie, Hemsworth portrays a younger Optimus Prime, back when he was known as Orion Pax. The narrative explores the paths taken by Orion and his brother D-16, which eventually lead them to become the sworn enemies Optimus Prime and Megatron.
The core similarity between Optimus Prime and Thor lies in their fractured relationships with their brothers. Hemsworth emphasizes the close bond that becomes damaged, a common theme that could have unfolded differently under other circumstances.
At a fundamental level, many of these stories revolve around relationships, whether it's the dynamic between fathers and sons or between brothers. Thor's relationship with his father, Odin, and his brother, Loki, mirrors the bond between Optimus Prime and his brother, Megatron.
The parallels deepen when considering that Optimus Prime, originally Orion Pax, is the son of Alpha Trion, a wise and ancient Cybertronian, reminiscent of Thor's father, Odin. Megatron, much like Loki, chooses a darker path, betraying his brother, which makes them formidable adversaries. Transformers One delves into the backstory of how these brothers ended up as enemies, akin to the childhood flashbacks of Thor and Loki in the 2011 film Thor.
Directed by Josh Cooley of Toy Story 4 fame, Transformers One boasts a star-studded cast, including Brian Tyree Henry as D-16, Scarlett Johansson as Elita, Keegan-Michael Key as B-127, Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Steve Buscemi as Starscream.
Transformers One is set to release in theaters on September 20 in the US and October 11 in the UK. For more updates, stay tuned to our coverage of upcoming movies and the SDCC 2024 live blog.
