It has come to light that Tesla is preparing to discontinue Steam games support in its updated Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles. This decision affects the ability to engage in popular video games such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Forza Horizon 5 using a compatible game controller when the vehicle is not moving.
Electric vehicle (EV) news source electrek was the first to reveal this development, stating that Tesla has informed recent recipients of the new Model S and Model X about an upgrade to the gaming system, rendering it incapable of running Steam games. They mentioned in their communication that, while this specific feature will be removed, other entertainment and application features will remain intact. This hardware-related adjustment seems not to impact owners who already possess these models.
Introduced in a trial phase in December 2022, the option to play Steam games directly from the Tesla interface was initially announced by Tesla CEO Elon Musk for an August launch. Despite its somewhat unconventional nature, the idea of gaming within the vehicle's interface has been intriguing. Musk has even boasted about the Tesla Model S Plaid's gaming capability, comparing it to that of the PlayStation 5, adding an extra perk for the high-priced vehicle, especially when not in motion.
Prospective Tesla purchasers looking forward to in-vehicle gaming might consider alternatives such as acquiring a portable gaming device like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, or the PlayStation Portal for remote gaming.
In related news, Tesla has faced several challenges with the launch of the Tesla Cybertruck. Among complaints from early users and specific models being recalled over concerns that the accelerator pedal could become lodged, creating an elevated risk of an accident.
